Ping G2 irons
Club:Ping G2 irons (3-pw) black dot
Shaft:Ping CS lite steel regular flex
Grip:Ping cord spiral
Looks:You either love or hate the look of Ping
clubs. They are certainly not the prettiest of clubs to look at,but if
you are a fan you seem to come back to purchase them all the time. These
are no exception to the "beauty in the eye of the beholder" adige but
take it to another level altogether.
These are very big, chunky and even a little awkward to the eye,but do
have a rich satin finish that is Ping quality all over. The topline is
thick and the offset plentiful, particulary in the long irons. The cavity
in all clubs is large and deep and there is a plastic "weight plug" placed
low in the cavity (this may be to increase back weighting or to absorb
vibration).High handicappers will not like the looks at all (even Ping
followers will be surprised),but the high handicap man will be filled
with confidence and feel that even the long irons can be easily hit consistently
well. The heads also feel nice and heavy in the hands, also a confidence
lifter for the high handicapper.

Performance:These are one of the easiest to
use irons you will ever hit.The 3 and 4 irons have such low weighting
and wide soles that they pick the ball off fairway lies and rough effortlessly. The
ball flies high off each club and for reasonable distance. It is not the
longest hitting club, but this is all down to the higher than normal ball
flight. The stock CS shaft is good, but mid handicappers might prefer a
Dynamic Gold or Rifle steel shaft to bring ball flight down, otherwise
the high handicappers will do just fine with the CS.Misses were mostly
to the left (this was probably due to the offset) and habitual slicers
(ie.lots of you!)will benefit from this.
The wedges are clunky and do not favour touch shots around the green and
knockdown punches, but do perform excellently from rough and sand.
Mid handicap Ping fans may replace the wedges with the excellent new Ping
MB model, which is a fine product.

Value:Ping clubs have always been expensive
and these are no exception. In comparison to their main competitors in
the high handicap (premium end) they are overpriced.Callaway Big Bertha,Adams
idea and Wilson Deep Red fluid feel all represent better value. At the
asking prices for this club in steel and in graphite they will need to
be a long term investment, but if you do decide to change rest assured
that Ping's hold their value extremely well.

Verdict: Wealthy high handicap Ping followers
should get a custom fit (it's free on all Ping clubs!) at their local
pro and purchase right now.The G2EZ is even easier to hit and you can
even replace the G2 long irons with the" rescue" like G2HL's if you totally
detest your 3,4 and 5 irons!
Low handicappers should steer clear, however, and investigate the i3+ range
or the new S59 or look at the new cobo sets (long iron cavities, short
iron blades) from Nike,MacGregor and TaylorMade.
